Azure-docs: How do you automate snapshots?

Created on 20 May 2020  Â·  13Comments  Â·  Source: MicrosoftDocs/azure-docs

Please include instructions on how to setup automatic snapshots. SysAdmin's can't manually go in daily/hrly creating manual snapshots of all Azure FileShares.

@kcnighsurf Thanks for your question. We are checking on this and will respond to you soon.

@kcnighsurf Your feedback has been shared with the content owner for further review.

@kcnighsurf Thanks for reaching out, this is the conceptual article for snapshots, and does not include how-to instructions.

For scripting snapshot creation (and other things), we have a PowerShell how-to article and a CLI how-to article, which are what you're looking for. These are linked in the next steps section of the conceptual article. :)

Did you have any other questions regarding this? If not, I'll close this out.

@SumanthMarigowda-MSFT FYI

Thanks @roygara I did see that article and it shows how to create a snapshot with CLI, I can do that in ARM-UI also but I still don't see intructions to SCHEDULE snapshots, Do you have the URL? I looked herehttps://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/storage/files/storage-how-to-use-files-cli#create-and-manage-share-snapshots

@kcnighsurf You wouldn't schedule a snapshot. In your environment, you'd schedule a CLI/PowerShell script to run at particular intervals.

I don't think there is a way to schedule a snapshot, I don't see anything like that in the SDK. I'll ask the product team to be sure but, pretty sure you'd schedule your script, instead.

@kcnighsurf It'll be a while until I hear back from the product team, I did some digging in the interim, you could use an Azure recovery services vault to accomplish this from the portal. I'll double check with the product team to make sure they're ok with it but, I think we should add this to the article. Thanks for bringing that up. :)

Would that fit your use case? Or do you need a programmatic way of doing it?

This article suggests you can now schedule Azure File Share snapshots using Azure Backup. Recommend this article reference Recovery Services Vault - Azure Backup where a min Daily Snapshot can be automated the easy way.

â—‰ Flexible backup policy: Azure Backup provides you with the ability to create and modify policies of choice to define the schedule for snapshots.

note: Min schedule is daily so if people want more regular then script and schedule the script.

Sorry just read your reply. Yes - A link to Azure Recovery Services that schedules snapshots of Azure Files Shares is perfect. The only caveat is min schedule is once a day.

@kcnighsurf Thanks, I've staged a PR incorporating some discussion about this in the article, as well as the next steps link. I'll still need to work with the product team on the exact verbiage and so on but, changes should be live next week.

Did you have any other questions related to this I can help with?

No - Thanks.

I've finished working with the product team and submitted changes. They should be live soon.

I'll close this out accordingly, thanks again for reaching out. It really does help us improve our docs. :)
