Security groups are fully supported for licensing purposes and as far I can confirm they are not treated any differently. The article in question should have PowerShell examples and doesn't. I'm taking a work item to put that together. It will be triaged and prioritized with the rest of my work, but usually the PM writes for this feature so I might just be the driver for this. Closing this bug as I don't know when this gets done. I'm booking the time in March 2020.
