Status Monitor (v1) is an MSI installed based attach program. This installs the SDK v2.4 by instrumenting individual applications hosted in IIS and required a re-install every time you redeploy your application. This product is no longer under development and will be retired in the new future.

Status Monitor V2 is a powershell module. This installs the SDK v2.9 by instrumenting IIS. This does not require re-installs.

Both v1 and v2 will install the same version of the Instrumentation Engine which collects full text SQL command queries.

Azure Cloud Services requires a startup task for every deployment because it creates new VMs. For this reason, either version (v1 or v2) can be used.

@tkumark We are going to close this thread as resolved but if there are any further questions regarding the documentation, please tag me in your reply and we will be happy to continue the conversation.

Can you monitor anything else besides IIS with Azure Monitor Application Insights Agent (aka. Status Monitor v2)?
Update: Never mind, I see that only IIS is supported at https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/azure-monitor/app/azure-vm-vmss-apps#enable-application-insights
