Azure-docs: Add app service plan hybrid connection limits

Created on 2 May 2019  Â·  8Comments  Â·  Source: MicrosoftDocs/azure-docs

It would be handy to have the app service hybrid connection limits from https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/app-service/app-service-hybrid-connections listed on this page.

Assigning @rothja for visibility and document enhancement consideration to add app service hybrid connection limits in this article

@patros Thanks for the question. I manage this article, but I'm not the subject matter expert on all areas. Could you give me a little more information? Is this related to App Service Plans or is it something different? Thank you for helping me to understand so I can get it to the right person.

Hi @rothja. It is a feature of app service plans. It's listed under networking on the page you linked.

It's a feature that allows you to run a "gateway", a hybrid connection manager, on premise behind your firewall. It allows you to connect to on premise endpoints like database servers. It does this by opening an outbound connection to your app service and creates sort of a tunnel. This is all done transparently to your app. It's behaves like a direct connection so you don't need to make any changes to your app to use it. And it keeps your security team happy because they don't need to allow any inbound traffic because the hybrid connection manager makes an outbound connection.

The limit is applied at the plan level. And each configured connection is counted.

For example...
If you have two web apps in the plan both connecting to the same on premise database server it is counted as two hybrid connections. Even though the destination is the same.

In the basic pricing tier the limit is 5. If a single web app in the plan has 5 connections they are all consumed and you can't add a connection to any other web app in the plan. Or you could have 5 web apps each with a single connection. Or other combinations. As long as across the plan there are no more than 5 in total.

Hope this helps.

@patros Thank you! This helps a lot. My guess is that @cephalin might be the right person to help look at this initially. Cephas, can you let us know if you can help on this limits request? Thank you!

@SumanthMarigowda-MSFT Can you reassign this git issue to @cephalin for now and unassign me? @patros Thank you for your patience as we route this issue!

@cephalin Any update on this please ?

@patros @KrishnaG-MSFT Sorry for the delay. I've added the information to the limits doc now. It should be published sometime today. #please-close
