Azure-docs: Image created as Standard HDD?

Created on 15 Nov 2018  Â·  8Comments  Â·  Source: MicrosoftDocs/azure-docs

I created a SSD-based VM (DS_v2 sku) and ran through the steps to sysprep it. I then created an image via powershell command:

New-AzureRmImage -Image $image -ImageName $vmImageName -ResourceGroupName $rgName

I then see the new image. When I click on it in the portal I view under 'OS Disk' it says 'Account Type' = 'Standard HDD'. Why is this? Does this mean any new VM's created from this image will always be Standard HDD based? Even if I try to spin up a SSD-based sku from it?

@fastrnu80 Sorry for the delay. I tried out this scenario. Images are stored in standard HDD. But when you are creating a VM from that image you can select any sku(premium ssd, standard ssd etc).

Ok, just wanted to make sure that even though I'm spinning up a SSD sku VM that it wasn't spinning up in a HDD storage account. I believe that is a possible scenario in Azure though and I wouldn't want to be paying for SSD but only getting SSD speeds.

Thanks,

Russell

I will close this out for now. If you need additional help please let me know and we can reopen and continue.

Hi Jagadeesh, can you confirm the part about a SSD based VM being spun up in a HDD account. Can you confirm the VM is not being spun up in a HDD storage account?

@fastrnu80 When we create a machine from the image, we can select the storage sku we need. Based on the selected storage sku, customers will be charged.
we can verify this scenario after creating a VM.
Lets say we are creating a VM from the image and selecting "Premiun SSD" as the sku under storage.
Once the VM is created, we can go to the disks and check the storage type.
It will show "Premium SSD" and we will be charged based on that SKU.

@fastrnu80 What @jakaruna-MSFT said is correct - for images. As long as you really are creating a VM from an image, you can have it created as an SSD or HDD. But, if you "attach" an existing VHD, you get the VHD in whatever storage it is currently stored in. When you create a VM from an image, it actually creates a new VHD from the image. Attaching just uses the VHD that is already there :)

Great, thanks!!
