Azure-docs: Pricing for export

Created on 22 Sep 2018  Â·  11Comments  Â·  Source: MicrosoftDocs/azure-docs

In one of the screenshots there is a reference to costs incurred by exporting but there isn't any other mention of that in the docs or on the AI pricing pages. Does the cost just refer to the cost of the azure storage (and potential data egress associated with that) or is there a specific cost for the export as well?

@aL3891 Thanks for your feedback! We will investigate and update as appropriate.

@aL3891 We can't really give out information on billing because even slightly outdated information can have a large financial impact. The best thing to do is to check out our pricing calculator at https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/pricing/calculator/. If you have more specific questions, you can open a billing support request in the Azure portal by going to Help + support > New support request > Billing and then complete the wizard.

We are going to close this thread as resolved but if there are any further questions regarding the documentation, please tag me in your reply and we will be happy to continue the conversation.

@kobulloc-MSFT i'm not asking for specific pricing information, i'm asking if there is a cost to export at all. As I mentioned, there is no information on export pricing in the calculator or anywhere else that I can find.

If that screenshot should be used, then there should also be a note on what cost the screenshot refers to and where more information about the specifics can be found. if there isn't a cost associated with export, then there could just be a note saying you'll be billed for storage, that is the case for other pages in the docs

@aL3891 When I went through the documentation, I was not presented with any notifications (as seen in the screenshots below, just a prompt to create a storage account and you can find price calculator information for that here: https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/pricing/details/storage/blobs/).

@mrbullwinkle We should update the first screenshot in the section in question (Using Continuous Export will incur additional...) to avoid confusion moving forward.

Perhaps i'm misunderstanding what you mean when you say you "went though the documentation", but in the docs there is a screenshot with a reference to additional cost, but going though the steps in the portal there is not.

That is why I opened this issue, its confusing as a reader of the docs as to if there is a cost or not with that screenshot in the docs.

I also think it would be woth to have a note in the docs wether there is actually a cost to the export itself or if its just for the storage. Right now, especially if you change the screenshot in the docs, you kind of assume that there isn't, but i think its good to be explicit, especially if something _doesn't_ have a cost to it.

@aL3891 You are correct. As you can see in the screenshots above, what I saw in the portal (and it sounds like what you saw as well) is that there is no mention of an additional cost outside of storage in that step. The screenshot is out of date, and hopefully that underscores the importance of using the pricing calculator for up to date pricing information.

I do agree with you and we do want the document to be less confusing. I've assigned this to the document author to update accordingly so that this will be clearer moving forward.

@aL3891 The document should be updated shortly. To specifically address your question, please review the pricing change announcement made here:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/application-insights/app-insights-pricing#pricing-plans

Great, thanks!

The doc was updated on September 26 to address this issue.
