Azure-devops-docs: No description of "Maintenance"

If I don't schedule a maintenance window, when will the agents run maintenance?
If no window is scheduled, then the agents in that pool will not run the maintenance job.

What is maintenance? I came to this page after discovering the option to schedule maintenance for our self-hosted agents, but it's not clear to me what benefit or detriment it will have. It seems off by default and they're running just fine without it.

No, I’m asking where is the documentation for maintenance. This page mentions it obliquely without telling me what it is and why I’d want to enable it.
