Arctos: Map on taxon page - request for minimization

Request from @sharphyl related to the taxon details page.

  • [x] Decrease the size of the locality map with an option to increase the size

_Originally posted by @Jegelewicz in https://github.com/ArctosDB/arctos/issues/3263#issuecomment-750898772_

When editing classifications, the taxon detail page takes a bit to load - specifically the map, which causes a slowdown in workflow. Phyllis has suggested that the map be minimized or hidden to avoid this problem. Potential options include:

  1. Make the map smaller (I'm not sure this will solve the problem because the lag in the page is loading is due to processing to get the map data).

  2. Hide the map and allow it to be opened with a click (Although the lag may still be there, it will be "hidden" along with the hidden map).

  3. May have the same issues as 1, but I did consider placing the map and the image gallery next to each other on the page so that there isn't so much white space and scrolling required. This would necessarily make both the map and the gallery smaller in order to fit them on the page.

Other ideas are welcome!

Neither the map nor the data behind it affect page load time in any way.

I kind of like the maps. They help me when assigning taxonomy for vertebrates to make sure I'm in the right ball park for the animal to see if people have assigned it to other animals georeferenced to a similar area.
Two questions:

  1. Does the map come up when there are no specimens assigned to the taxonomy?
  2. What might be driving load time for the page?

I said this in our taxonomy meeting too, I also like the maps. I use them
to eyeball check that we have the number of animals I roughly think we
should have, and from the right countries.
But I am fine with minimizing it in some way if it helps with others using
the taxonomy pages.

I also like the maps, and I think most users find something valuable in them that's not available from your normal "taxonomy page." The taxonomy pages certainly account for a large part of our public traffic.

I do not understand how they're in the way of anything else.

I think the page performs reasonably well - it consistently loads in under 1.5S on my shoddy residential connection. I don't think there's much performance to be gained, even if we add a bunch of complexity. I'm guessing any noticeable problems are well downstream of Arctos, but without more information that's just a guess.

Maps only load if there's something to map.

Something does - but I'll let @sharpphyl weigh in here, because she is the super-user who is experiencing the issue. Maybe she can record it...

It sounds like there are very few other users who need to adjust taxonomy frequently and I'm almost done with moving classifications without an aphiaID from WoRMS (via Arctos) to Arctos and cleaning up the rest of the record. If I'm the only one who would benefit from having the map being either smaller (with an option to enlarge) or hidden with a down arrow, I don't think this a top priority issue. If another user starts to edit taxonomy daily, the issue of a map that takes up half the screen may arise again.

BUT there are other issues with the map that need to be addressed. @Jegelewicz is aware of these but I think they deserve to be in a GitHub issue. Teresa, maybe you can change the title of this issue.

Maps only load if there's something to map.

I don't find this to be true @dustymc. See example below

You will notice that there are no specimens using this taxon name but there is still a map here this morning. I modified the identification on our one record using this name over a week ago and it still creates a map and a clickable link that goes to no record. Let me know if there's anything I can do to get rid of this "link." I did a cache refresh on the record that previously used it, but so far it hasn't eliminated the map. Maybe it takes a while.

Also note that when there are no records using the taxon name, the external validation chart disappears. @Jegelewicz is aware of this and probably working on it.

Also, @Jegelewicz if we're going to have the map at this size, can we return to where we can see the catalog records using the taxon name and the external validation without a down arrow? It's a great way to tighten up the screen but if it's used intermittently, it somewhat loses its effectiveness.

Dusty says he can fix because of page resize. Let's see if that helps!

Maybe it takes a while.

yes

external validation chart disappears.

fixed

I can't recreate the behavior described in the AWG meeting, there's no shifting in my environment - can someone take a screenshot video or something?

@sharpphyl can you test this now - I think Dusty made a change that is expected to help.

Yes, much better. I can scroll down to the classifications without the page continuing to bounce up and down while the map loads. Let's close this.
