Current Arctos has two identifier fields defined as follows:

Original Identifier = Other values that link a specimen with its data. For example, label values applied by an agency project, or various values that are not known to be of a more defined identifier type.

Secondary Identifier = Other numbers that don't primarily identify the specimen. Nobody knows why you should ever use this.

Arctos has 80,681 records with secondary identifier. ALMNH has a lot of these. MVZ also has used it to represent different kinds of identifiers (e.g., tissue-specific, audio-specific), not sure about other collections.

These fields are used somewhat randomly and inconsistently. People agree that it's not helpful to have an identifier type where definition is not to use it.

Arctos Working Group recommendation per meeting 4/9/2020 was to combine these into one field called "Other Identifier."

Not if they are defined identifiers (your ALMNH whatever identifiers should stay the way they are).

I agree with reviewing these, perhaps in a Google doc we can annotate. But
I disagree with getting rid of used IDs without definitions by merging them
into some garbage basket Id. The names themselves are definitions and
provide content.

How about merging eg

San Jose State University==SJSU R -5929

into

institutional catalog number==San Jose State University SJSU R -5929

? That would get rid of a fair number of IDs that'll never be resolvable, and I don't think would give up any functionality.

That works, and is an improvement in multiple ways. Most people will search
on other ID contains "San Jose State University" rather than scroll through
the endless dropdown of IDs anyway.

That's a good example - it helps NPS folks find "their" specimens, there's some semi-realistic chance they'll come up with something we can talk to using that identifier, etc.

I see little value in "find rats fondled by someone somehow allegedly associated with giant institution at some point in the past," and I don't think those data are useful for anything much more targeted than that.

FROM the rat those data are useful, but only to people. People are reasonably good at interpreting messy strings, I don't think they'll have a problem with "SjSUR5-929," and if they can interpret it as something useful (eg, something that can lead machines to more data) then they can easily retype.

If someone does care, do the messes caused by scrolling through the ~200 (and growing) low-value types outweigh whatever concerns they have?

I don't think the "huge organization" types will ever work for that - those seem to ~always be implemented as some form of Organization:Department, and that'll probably take a human to suss out.

... or whatever that particular botanist means by "duplicate" on that particular day....

In any case, I don't think these are data that a machine will ever be able to follow, and I don't think anything we might do with categorization will do much one way or the other for humans.

That seems reasonable to me - I'd be absolutely thrilled if this just turns into some sort of "how to deal with identifiers" documentation, which we might eventually apply to existing data.

Also note that my giant list above is mostly based on a lack of documentation - carefully documenting anything we want to keep would make it much more useful, and much less likely to end up in discussions like this.

Issue summary

Original Identifier = Other values that link a specimen with its data. For example, label values applied by an agency project, or various values that are not known to be of a more defined identifier type.

Secondary Identifier = Other numbers that don't primarily identify the specimen. Nobody knows why you should ever use this.

Arctos has 80,681 records with secondary identifier. ALMNH has a lot of these. MVZ also has used it to represent different kinds of identifiers (e.g., tissue-specific, audio-specific), not sure about other collections.

These fields are used somewhat randomly and inconsistently. People agree that it's not helpful to have an identifier type where definition is not to use it.

Arctos Working Group recommendation per meeting 4/9/2020 was to combine these into one field called "Other Identifier." We would like to have Dusty proceed with this.

Code Table Admins are reviewing and cleaning up the code table, then we will make recommendations for the treatment of other terms and enhancements.

When is spring break for most folks? Our's is next week, so Friday 3/26 would work well but I'm open to other suggestions.

I have a related question. I'm trying to upload some data from NM and the "collector" for most is a wildlife rehabilitation center, either "Wildlife Rescue Inc., of New Mexico" or "New Mexico Wildlife Center." I have a rehab identifier number for them, but would you put that in as a collector number, other identifier, or as an other_ID_num with the center as the other_ID_num_type ?

Arctos has it both ways, where the rehab number is either an 'other identifier' for the collector or as an other_ID_num where the rehab center is the other_ID_num_type. In this particular case, we don't have those NM rehab centers in the other_ID_num_type code table, but we do have them as agents and the number has gone in as an other identifer. For Lindsay Wildlife Hospital, we've been putting that in as collector but it's also in other_ID_num_type, so the number has been going in as an other_ID_num.

How do we decide what goes in as other identifier, and what goes in as other_ID_num (which is sorta basically the same thing, at least in this case)?

First choice, always: something with a base_url (don't have one here)
Second choice: something that COULD have a base_url (eg if they get organized and online). "New Mexico Wildlife Center" (and similar) fits here.

We can always get the Manter Lab later - or you can wait until @ccicero has that one complete.

I made some additional changes to the spreadsheet; I don't think it's anything significant, just cleaned some things up and removed commas. Values in newIDType will replace values in IDType on Friday
