Latest version of the app brings a 'detailed view' for items in the Nearby map which also includes a Wikipedia button that goes to a corresponding article. However the button does not work in some cases even when Wikipedia article is clearly available. I suspect this is because the app only loads English Wikipedia, no matter what the language settings are.
It would be cool if we could prefer links to native language Wikipedia. If not available, then we should link to English. If English is unavailable too, we might link to other Wikipedias ordered by size.
[Beginner] I'd like to try this one (first task). Does wikipedia provide an API that allows retrieval of articles by language/size?
Tagging @nicolas-raoul on this.
I can only guess this would be handled by the Wikidata API: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wikibase/API#wbgetentities
I want to try to repro this - is there an easy way to change language in the app? I've gone to the wikimedia commons preferences and set my language to something else but I'm not seeing it take effect in the app. (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:Preferences)
I think you need to change the language in Settings of your mobile device.
Hi @albendz , there is no way to change language in the app specifically. The app's language changes depending on the language set in the phone settings. :) https://stackoverflow.com/questions/4212320/get-the-current-language-in-device could be helpful in retrieving the language.
This Wikidata query gives you all Wikipedia articles about the Eiffel Tower (Q243):
SELECT ?article WHERE {
?article schema:about wd:Q243.
FILTER (CONTAINS(STR(?article), ".wikipedia.org/"))
}
I don't know any API that gives the size of the articles, though.
Thanks, I'll start with the languages then.
Update: Found a repro on my phone with released, found the code I want to change, debugging issues with project setup and plugin configurations.
