Appcenter: Xamarin UI Test support for Xcode 12 (iOS 14)
Hi all,
There hasn't been a new release for Xamarin UI test in past 6 months, Xamarin UI Test(3.0.7) does not support Xcode 12(iOS 14.0)
Is there any information on when would we have the new Xamarin UITest release to support Xcode 12(iOS 14)?

Just confirming, this does not work on preview packages as well. On Xamarin.UITest 3.0.8-dev1 with the same issue.

**Xamarin.UITest is not supporting Xcode 12 & iOS 14 resulting in XDB Device Agent failing to launch Device Agent on a Physical iPhone device. This had occurred on a previous version with Xcode 11 and iOS 13.

Just ran into the same problem and I have to use xCode 12.
Anybody know a workaround - other than reinstalling xcode 11.7 ??
I use iOS simulators to run xamarin ui tests on our apps...

@OladotunO I noticed that when you update to Xcode version 12 it brakes all of ios versions not just ios version 14. being on Xcode version 11.7 allows the previous version to work.

Has anyone heard from a Xamarin/Microsoft bod yet on this issue? This is beyond a joke.
I am on an email thread from a chap on Xamarin.UITest support for a different issue (which he couldn't resolve) and he says just wait for a response! This issue has been open for 2 weeks so far!
If Microsoft aren't going to support the products we rely on, then make them open source so we can apply the fixes until we move on to better, supported products. I am tired of this nonsense.

If anyone needs a workaround until Microsoft releases an update:
Install the older version of Xamarin.iOS here: https://dl.xamarin.com/MonoTouch/Mac/xamarin.ios-13.22.1.23.pkg (Mac Link)
Install the older version of Xcode 11.7 here: https://developer.apple.com/services-account/download?path=/Developer_Tools/Xcode_11.7/Xcode_11.7.xip
Then in Visual Studio, set your Xcode path accordingly.

Same here, unbelievable, we are relying on this software for production. Not being able to run tests is unacceptable. We cannot release software to app stores without having it tested... Microsoft this is a basic tool for developers!!!

It would be good to know the status of this. Xamarin.UITest is one of the few bits of the Xamarin stack that never got open-sourced, so it's not possible to either fix things ourselves or at least see any type of progress on this project other than when preview NuGet packages appear.

@MicrosoftCSA what do you mean by "shortly"? Should we look for different UITests framework or should we wait for your fix? If the latest then what is the ETA of the fix?
Having UITests that are useless is pretty pointless, won't you agree?

@lubiepomaranczki I agree with your frustration but in an effort to help you Xamarin.UITest still works on ios version 13.7 and lower are you have the issue where it's not working at all for you? if you do, you just need to downgrade your Xcode version to 11.7 so that way you can still run your tests on ios in general.

Install the older version of Xamarin.iOS here: https://dl.xamarin.com/MonoTouch/Mac/xamarin.ios-13.22.1.23.pkg (Mac Link)
Install the older version of Xcode 11.7 here: https://developer.apple.com/services-account/download?path=/Developer_Tools/Xcode_11.7/Xcode_11.7.xipThen in Visual Studio, set your Xcode path accordingly.

I did. Apple SDK is referring to Xcode 11.7 in my VS preferences. Still getting the same error on iOS 14

Fortunetly, I have another Mac to rebuild application just for UI Tests using XCode 11.7 and older Xamarin.IOS mentioned above. This is working solution until new version of Xamarin.UITests will be released. By the way AppCenter also hasn't test devices with iOS 14 now.

@dimazaid I think you guys need to treat Xamarin.UITest with the same level of support as you treat Xamarin.iOS. Developers are forced to upgrade to the latest version of XCode by Apple and by their customers who upgrade the OS at a very fast pace. In our case we are at a point where are our code targets iOS SDK 14 and doesn't compile with previous version of XCode and or Xamarin.iOS. We can't tell our customers they can't get the latest version of our app because Microsoft didn't add support to the testing framework we use and we can't release a version we can't test. Manual testing is very time consuming and expensive.
Historically, Xamarin has been very good in keeping up to date with iOS bindings and had day 1 support. Xamarin.UITest should not be the exception.

Paying customer here wants to know how long we'll be blocked on this. We pay for MSDN, Visual Studio (including Enterprise), App Center, and Azure for data exports. That's a lot of money we're paying to not see any movement on this issue for over a month. Tests run fine on App Center test in the cloud but if we can't develop and run tests locally we are blocked. The work around mentioned above (rolling back our development environments) is probably not a feasible solution for most of us. @dimazaid

This is non-sense.
I just spent 3 hours trying to figure out why my iOS UI tests weren't working. Founding this issue was a big relief, but also very frustrating since it's been a month and a half this issue is here and still no fix. This should be THE number 1 priority for Xamarin.UI.Tests. Holy, this really makes me think about choosing other frameworks for my UI tests, but I don't even know any others!
Either keep up Xamarin.UITests with the Xcode updates, or make this open source so that people make it themselves!

@piotrzola , currently I'm trying to implement a common test layer for my ios/android and uwp projects based on xamarin forms.
I've abstracted the test surface so using a proxy I wrap Appium functions to UITest interface.
So uwp tests use Appium, ios/android test use UITest and I can write the tests only once.
This solution is based to UITest because there is AppCenter that is well integrable with a CI/CD azure pipeline.
Appcenter with its battery of devices for mass testing is very attractive, but I don't know if there are equiparable solutions.
Do you know a viable alternative to this? Can you provide link to documentation and/or tutorial?

For my project's UITests I was able to work around the unsupported version of iOS 14. To be clear, I could not get Xamarin.UITest to work with Xcode 12, but what I could do was "downgrade" my Xamarin.iOS framework (to 13.20.1.41), install Xcode 11.7, and then boom run my tests again.
I followed the instructions from this blog to do so: https://damian.fyi/2020/04/27/old-xcode-xamarin/
One caveat: I did not install the previous version of Xamarin.iOS manually as suggested w/in the blog. Rather, I used my Rider IDE to update Xamarin.iOS after I removed Xamarion.iOS 14.2; which the IDE auto-magically installed 13.20 instead of 14.2. If you use VS to update Xamarin.iOS then you'll prob end up getting stuck with 14.2 again, so it's probably best to manually install the version you need directly, per the blog's instructions.

Are you able to get backdoors on Appium? Without backdoors it is impossible to log into different places in the app.

It is like a joke. We couldn't use Xamarin uitest with last xcode about 1 month. We are all developers that's why I can understand a bit delay for update. But this is too late too. Won't microsoft support xamarin uitest anymore?

Hi Everyone!
I am so sorry for my delayed response.
We (the App Center team) unexpectedly had to divert resources from Xamarin.UITest to diagnose and fix an Android 11 regression that was impacting App Center Test. It was a tricky one to track down, but now that it's resolved I can give a better timeline for Xamarin.UITest.
Xamarin.UITest is now our engineers' top-priority and we are confident that we will have Xcode 12 support completed by the end of this month.
I agree that we dropped the ball on supporting Xcode 12 and that we can (and should) do a better job moving forward. Learning from this, I am currently working on a proposal to upper management that would reallocate more engineering resources to focus on Xamarin.UITest.
I am freezing responses for now to ensure this latest update doesn't get lost in the thread.

@dimazaid I think you guys need to treat Xamarin.UITest with the same level of support as you treat Xamarin.iOS. Developers are forced to upgrade to the latest version of XCode by Apple and by their customers who upgrade the OS at a very fast pace. In our case we are at a point where are our code targets iOS SDK 14 and doesn't compile with previous version of XCode and or Xamarin.iOS. We can't tell our customers they can't get the latest version of our app because Microsoft didn't add support to the testing framework we use and we can't release a version we can't test. Manual testing is very time consuming and expensive.
Historically, Xamarin has been very good in keeping up to date with iOS bindings and had day 1 support. Xamarin.UITest should not be the exception.
