I'm also getting the same issue.

Is there any workaround for this issue?

it seems that the aapt you are using does not support custom res dir ------->"navigation"

it's not custom res dir
AndroidX have predefined res dir for "navigation"

Thanks for the report. It seems they slipped a new resource into aapt1, which I messed due to the large commit - https://github.com/aosp-mirror/platform_frameworks_base/commit/e33de76a16f6acc42858766460976f44e629657d#diff-e7a93bfac1c422acb7946f9512eb2712

I need to update aapt1 binaries.

Actually on 2nd thought. navigation was only patched to aapt2. aapt1 is no longer a viable option for this application.

Will do some more investigation, this is probably - no fix.

Hi ,

i have tested with latest version (2.3.4), still i am not able to build using (apktool b DoximityX --use-aapt2)

i am getting following error message

The above error is a new restriction and fixed in the upcoming v2.4.0 release. You can solve this manually by removing all values in the ids.xml file. Basically make them all null by doing

<item type="id" name="foo" />

This is a name space issue which is due to '$' symbol found in resource files,
So if you could remove this '$' symbol and then rebuild this will fix your issue.
(Ex: $avd_hide_password__0 to avd_hide_password__0 )

I removed $ but got an error again.

@tahsin1373 with latest Apktool 2.4.1, when I removed $, I got these errors when building with --use-aapt2:

W: /home/XXX/XXX/res/values/public.xml:1682: error: no definition for declared symbol 'com.XXX.XXX:drawable/avd_hide_password__0'.
W: /home/XXX/XXX/res/values/public.xml:1683: error: no definition for declared symbol 'com.XXX.XXX:drawable/avd_hide_password__1'.
W: /home/XXX/XXX/res/values/public.xml:1684: error: no definition for declared symbol 'com.XXX.XXX:drawable/avd_hide_password__2'.
W: /home/XXX/XXX/res/values/public.xml:1685: error: no definition for declared symbol 'com.XXX.XXX:drawable/avd_show_password__0'.
W: /home/XXX/XXX/res/values/public.xml:1686: error: no definition for declared symbol 'com.XXX.XXX:drawable/avd_show_password__1'.
W: /home/XXX/XXX/res/values/public.xml:1687: error: no definition for declared symbol 'com.XXX.XXX:drawable/avd_show_password__2'.

The only way I found to fix the errors is to remove the values completely (not just the $).
I also removed the attributes (and corresponding values) below to fix these errors:

W: /home/XXX/XXX/AndroidManifest.xml:1: error: attribute android:compileSdkVersion not found.
W: /home/XXX/XXX/AndroidManifest.xml:1: error: attribute android:compileSdkVersionCodename not found.
W: /home/XXX/XXX/AndroidManifest.xml:26: error: attribute android:appComponentFactory not found.

Now it compiled and I was able to install the APK after signing it using keytool and jarsigner with the commands found here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/2zwz07/reverse_engineering_android_part_1smali_intro/
I was able to bypass root detection with apktool. The modified app I tested seems to work, however I don't know if it was safe to remove the values like I did, the best thing would be a fix in apktool. cc @iBotPeaches
