Antennapod: Podcast audio snip or clip annotate & send

Created on 9 Oct 2019  路  5Comments  路  Source: AntennaPod/AntennaPod

While listening to a podcast, I would love the ability to snip/clip a user defined (30second to 10 minute) audio segment audio section, add tag and/or note then export annotated clip via app's {send to} ie email, text message, cloud storage. Would be great if the snip automatically included the Podcast name, attribution, and time stamp of the snipped audio. Would also be great if Podcast was bookmarked in app.

The ability to do this is available through some online services. They often require pay and lock you into using their website. Creating a audio clip would free the audio content. For inspiration Sonocent's desktop application.

How it might work:
Add a Section Snip Icon or menue option. User can select to begin clip 30s 1min, 3min 5min back and 1min 3min 5 min forward. And check and uncheck inclusion of certain pieces of metadata. Then tap "ok"

Ability to bookmark audio file with notes. Ability to see those bookmarks in audacity for post desktop processing.

Plugins would be quite cool to have (could be done by getting the ClassLoader from external apks, just like in #4077) but that would be a lot of work. It would not only require "obvious" changes like plugin management UI and hooks management but would also require to extract parts of AntennaPod, so they can be used as a library for the plugins. This would basically require restructuring the whole app. To be honest, I do not think AntennaPod will ever get plugins, simply because it is way too much work for a free-time project.

You can do this with any audio editing app or desktop software on the existing files on your devices. You're asking for too much, imho. The contributors have enough of a daunting task in making this podcast client as useful as the non-free clients. There's no need to burden them with frankenfeatures that go beyond what a podcast client should do.

Thanks for sharing your request, @nomatica. I must say, however, that I also feel that such audio editing (which audio clipping & sending is, really) is out of scope for a podcasting app.

Sharing the file url with timestamp is already possible - doesn't that work in most cases? I'm not sure if it's supported by other clients, but maybe it could be an option to allow the user to set an 'end time stamp' when sharing.

Hi @nomatica, I agree that this would be a nice feature to have in a podcast player. I have to agree with keunes, though. The feature is currently way out of scope for AntennaPod. Audio editing is not an easy thing to do if you want to support a ton of formats. Especially on a phone. Additionally, this would likely triple the amount of space that the AntennaPod app needs (without media files). ffmpeg on my PC is around 30MB, while the basic AntennaPod download is around 9MB.

At the moment, we have a ton of other issues to solve. Sorry for this negative reply.

@ByteHamster the negative response is quite understandable.

This is undoubtedly the best podcast player I have ever used, be it paid or not.

This said, options like the one @nomatica asked for would be more than welcome and would be possible if there was a AntennaPod had addon/plugin capabilities, so unburdening the contributors of the incessant asks for new features :)
