The automatic upload of an app having a defined start lock does not start when the app is running in the background and the uploads get paused if the app gets from the foreground to background. It works without the lock, just verified.
The auto upload should start independently on whether the app is in front/background and whether it is started at all.
Android version: 8.0.0

I do not have access to webserver logs
Will do if of interest.

I have the same issue although it happens regardless of whether I have start lock or not. It is also the case for manual uploads. When I start an upload, the screen must stay on and the app must stay in the foreground the whole time until the upload is complete for it to ever finish.

I have the same issue. Is there a chance to reopen this issue or shall I open a new one?
If the app goes to the background or the screen gets locked, synchronisation gets paused.
Android version: 8.0.0

Having the same issue on a OnePlus 6T, only when the app is not started.
Android version : 9
Nextcloud app version : 3.8.0 (beta)
Note : I already disabled battery optimization for the Nextcloud app.
I can confirm this is happening on this phone model.
Some problem with an OnePlus 5T. App has been excluded from Battery Optimization in the settings.

can we get rid of this bot?
Same Problem on my phone (Samsung Galaxy S10+) over night it only uploaded 100 pictures. When I let my screen on, it is much faster but also every ~10 pictures it stops, refreshing the upload page starts the upload immediately otherwise it will start when the app feels ready for it 🤷🏻♂️
Also seeing this behavior on a Pixel 2 with Android 10. The notifications are present, but no uploads happen while the app is in the background, currently doing a manual upload of my auto upload source folder.

please get rid of the "stale" bot, or at least set the "staleness" period to something much longer.

still does not work reliably.
Happens to me too on a pixel 4xl running android 10
Same problem on OnePlus 6T with android 10
Nextcloud removed from battery optimisation but will only upload when in foreground and screen is on
Hi,
I am using Samsung Galaxy S7 with Android 8.0 and the uploads stop when the app is in background. The Android App is latest 3.10.1 version.
No matter if auto upload or manual upload. It starts and then when the screen goes off, the upload stops.
However - I turned off all Battery optimimization which did not help at all.
I played around a little bit and I think there is a work around.
E.g. when I want to upload 100 Photos then I select them in the normal Gallery App (not in Nextcloud app) and share all 100 Photos with the Nextcloud app. The Nextcloud app asks for a location and then the upload starts and finishes also when the app is a n background.
I am also seeing this issue on Pixel 4 on Android 10. I just set up auto upload and it will run without the app in focus but stops when the phone screen turns off. If you turn screen back on it sometimes resumes or sometimes just freezes. If you go to activity in app, it starts again.
Same on Leeco Le2 X520, battery optimisation disabled.
Same on OnePlus 6T with battery optimization disabled. Very annoying having to start the app in the foreground and keep it there for the auto upload feature to "work". It kinda defeats the entire purpose of the feature.
I just saw this commit being released not long ago:
https://github.com/nextcloud/android/commit/f477a6873b5b695360c1c91299ab278588011377
Testing it out and so far it seems to have been doing wonders in regards to this issue!
My phone has been sleeping for about 30 minutes now and it's still uploading photos to my Nextcloud! :)
Good going @ezaquarii and @tobiasKaminsky ! :D
@GnaXi I will check it, thanks !
IT WORKS! Good job, keep going.
Thanks for confirmation.
This will be in next 3.12, so closing
