Adaway: make work on not rooted device

hi. can you please make it work on not-rooted devices. try to make a hosts file in a mine, regular, not system firectory, get a error because got no root.

Vankog thank you. there is a real logic to allow user to use AdAway without root, because there is a ways to use it and its useful features like auto-merging with user-define black and wihitelists. if only it will just work and create hosts file on a not rooted device.
of cource i can download hosts file manually , then edit to add my blacklist and search it like a 50 times to delete my whitelisted hosts. and do it every time i want. and it will be like 30 minutes every time. or i can just press one button in the AdAway and everything will be maked in a seconds and automamically.

You could just use Blokada, which is made for the purpose.

The problem with Blokada, NetGuard etc. is while they don't require root they render the device unable to use a VPN

What are you proposing exactly? If you don't have root then a VPN-simulating app is the only option you have.

I'm not proposing anything, I'm just giving a heads-up that they can't be used with VPNs which many people who are privacy-concerned also wish to use.

BTW if you use a VPN client such as OpenVPN for Android, you can set up custom DNS servers for the connection. In that case one available option is AdGuard DNS, although you don't have much configuration then.

yeah the DNS servers PIA have with their client seem to block pretty well

i'd like to use blokada but funny thing is its site blocked in my coutry so app can't download its hosts file. so i need another vpn to make work blokada vpn lol. and turn them off and on in a proper way. in the same time it will be so easy to use VPN Hosts app (to make vpn) + AdAway (to make hosts file) on a not rooted device if only AdAway don't ask for root to just download and make a hosts file

Blokada by default uses only the Energized Blu block list, which gets downloaded from GitHub.

You may use DNS66 (Block ads/hosts via DNS) - https://f-droid.org/app/org.jak_linux.dns66 - instead of Blokada. In DNS66 you may define all host sources it should use and even black- and whitelisting is possible.

Same as Blokada (actually, you can also whitelist _by app_). Anyway you are right, @shinji2009 shall be able to install both DNS66 and Blokada from F-Droid. No need to download APKs from other websites.

Ok, both are similar in functionality now. It's some time ago I had an trial installation of Blokada (ad blocker) (The ad blocker - battery efficient, fast, powerful and simple to use) - https://f-droid.org/app/org.blokada.alarm - in version 2 (now it's v3) and did not like the ui.

Because @shinji2009 talked about only one host file it is using I was in doubt Blokada admitts the use of user host sources...
So no need for AdAway being capable of merging these files without having root (or are there any people who transfer the host file via custom recovery to their system partition?)
