I just read that Microsoft is acquiring GitHub. I have seen enough of Microsoft love for open source for a life time to avoid everything that involves them. It is at best just a kiss of death and soon all users are required to install Microsoft malware and open Microsoft accounts to use GitHub, all all our information is for sale. I am quitting GitHub. So long and thanks for all the fish.
LOLOLNO
Oh another one who understand shit
where to move ?
I am moving to GitLab. One of the project I am contributing to moved there, too. No idea how it is yes but it looks a bit similar to GitHub so maybe the learning curve is not too steep.
Either GitLab like everyone is doing at the moment or selfhosted.
I would stay here, its fine and I really doubt MS will fuck it
I have seen M$ fucking so many projects, companies etc. in the past that I have zero trust in them. I don't want to have anything to do with them or their products. They've been trying to kill GNU/Linux, Open Source and Free software since 1995 when I got involved. I see this just as a continuation of their strategy: buy and kill. Oracle is doing exactly the same in their own front.
Killing Linus when more than half of Azure runs on Linux, when even window now runs subroutine Linux.
When some of the most Microsoft are open source (.net, code etc)
let's wait and see how we will be fucked.
@santerikannisto You may want to delay your move to GitLab, as they're currently still running on top of Microsoft's Azure platform ;)
Micro$oft does not have a controlling interest in that company. That is enough for me.

Well nothing is going to happen for a while. Self-hosting with Gitea is good and mirroring between gitlab and GitHub are capabilities as well in case GitHub needs to be abandoned, much like most folks abandoned Sourceforgea few years back.
If Gitea doesn't have the additional features desired (it has most of the features and capabilities that GitHub offers, and actually, even more, and has the familiar GitHub look and feel), then gitlab CE can be self-hosted too.
There are rebasing features that gitlab has, that Gitea doesn't quite offer yet, that are completely lacking in GitHub, as well as a few other niceties not often needed.
The downside of gitlab is Java, and all of the woes that comes with it, plus, I abandoned gitlab when I found myself having to deal with continuously updating it (not just Java) when they went through a rocky period of continual vulnerabilities... It's not very lightweight.
Gitea, on the other hand, aside from being pretty much just like GitHub functionally, is that it's exceedingly lightweight, consisting of a single file and written in Golang.
I see no reason to abandon a ship that isn't sinking yet, let alone taking on any water.
mACROsFOT is indeed evil, but have ventured into a troll company that seems to have pretty much given up their Halloween credo of embrace extend extinguish, in favor of patent trolling and leveraging existing open source infra as it is.
Will they mess up GitHub? Prolly. But that's going to be down the road a year or more anyway.
So I recommend leaving things as is and just being prepared with a self-hosted solution. I was happy with gitlab for a while, but have been exceedingly impressed with Gitea.
Here's some comparison info:

At the very least, Gitea provides a great way to host one's repos as a backup of the GitHub repos.
I hope that helps!

@Neilpang please merge my PR #1664 solving issue #1328 so that I can delete my GitHub account. When I delete it, all my data is gone as well as PRs. Thank you.
